Some legends just refuse to die—in the gun world, the Winchester repeating rifle is one of the most respected firearms of all time.
Known as “The Gun That Won The West”, the introduction of the Winchester repeater surely stood out among other rifles of its time. Featured on many outdoor, hunting, and reality TV shows, here is a brief history on the legend that is the Winchester repeater:
- Hunt, Arrowsmith, and Jennings
Shortly after the Civil War, Walter Hunt along with partners George Arrowsmith and Lewis Jennings worked on a rifle which featured a tube-loading repeater—they acquired a patent in 1849 and formed the Volcanic Arms Company. After a few more individuals improved upon the rifle’s design, an investor by the name of Oliver Winchester purchased a majority share of the Volcanic Arms Company.
- The First Winchester Rifle
Weapons produced by the company didn’t bear the Winchester name until 1866. That year, the Model 1866 became the first repeater rifle ever to hit the market. Subsequent improvements led to the development of the legendary Model 1873. This rifle was revolutionary for its time due to its center fire cartridges and .44 caliber ammunition capability.
Although their legendary rifle was introduced well over a hundred years ago, the Winchester Repeating Arms company still sells lever and bolt-action rifles and shotguns to this day. The repeater rifle, which has been made famous in movies and Western lore, is still made with the same commitment to quality.

If you have any experience with firearms, outdoor sports, or hunting, you know that keeping guns clean and well-maintained is essential. Not only does this prolong its lifespan, but it is a crucial step in gun safety for preventing jams and misfiring. You should always be prepared for something to go wrong with your gun and ammo for safety’s sake. While you don’t necessarily need to purchase a whole kit to maintain your firearm, here’s is a list of a few basic cleaning materials that any gun owner should have to maintain their hunting equipment.
Oils help lubricate the moving parts and ensure smoother handling with less friction damage, and solvents dissolve oil and residue buildup in the chamber and barrel. Both products are essential for smooth and safe functioning of your firearm. Using products like these will ensure many years of dependable and safe use from your firearm.
Otis Tech provides the signature breach-to-muzzle gun cleaning technology. By dragging a cloth or brush through the gun barrel from the firing chamber in the same direction as the bullet, you can ensure that your gun gets a thorough and efficient clean.
For stuck bullets or other debris that gets jammed in a barrel, this device is essential. Clear out any clogs in your barrel immediately to avoid injury to you or your gun.
